Dr Chhaya is a graduate from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital, Wardha, Nagpur. She has completed her Post Graduation Diploma in Pediatrics (Diploma in Child Health) from Govt. Medical College and Hospital, Nagpur University. After the post graduation, she underwent 2 years of rigorous training in Pediatric Neonatal Intensive Care at Nagpur, under Dr Satish Deopujari and Dr Suchita Khadse at Suretech Hospital and Research Centre, Nagpur.
She successfully completed her second Post Graduate Diploma in Developmental Neurology (PGDDN) from the Kerala University of Health Sciences at Thiruvanathapuram in the year 2008. Dr Chhaya is a trained developmental and behavioral pediatrician. She has received training in “Developmental Assessment Scales for Indian Infants (DASII) and Follow up of High Risk Newborns and Neuro- developmental Assessment Tests‘ at KEM Hospital and Research Center at Pune in 2011. She has also received training in Administration, Scoring and Interpretation of Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development“, at Pearson Clinical Assessment Program, in 2014 and 2016.
She has served as In- charge, Child Development Clinic-– at the Govt. Rehabilitation Institute for Intellectual Disabilities, Sec – 31, Chandigarh. She initiated and headed many Special Clinics for Children with Developmental Disorders and Intellectual Disabilities which provided services for children affected with Global Developmental Delays, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Down’s Syndrome, Learning Disability, Speech and Language Delays, Behavioral Disorders in Children and Adolescents with Intellectual Deficits, their Educational Rehabilitation and Vocational Training. She served as Vice President and Officiating President at the Ummeed Society, an NGO which works for creating employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. She has worked extensively with the Anganwadi Workers and Community Health workers providing training programs for them in growth and development assessment of children, nutrition, breast feeding and academic skills training.
She has received training in the Evidence Based Practices in Autism Spectrum Disorders, including Special Curriculum for children with ASD, at Center for Development and Disabilities, Albuquerque, University of New Mexico, USA.
She is also an Adolescent Health Expert and runs counseling and guidance clinic for Adolescents and Parental Skills Guidance. Dr Chhaya has special interest in Child Rights and Child Protection, her first training in the subject done through IAP in collaboration with Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health and Northumbria Healthcare Trust, UK in Jan 2007, at Mumbai.
She has been the Principal Author for many National and International books, chapters written on Developmental Disorders, Early Intervention, Learning Disorders, Mental Backwardness, Child Rights and Child Abuse, Difficult Adolescence, Steps to Happy Parenting etc.
In 2014, she was conferred upon the CDG IAP Honorary Fellowship Award For Excellence In The Field Of Childhood Disability And For Selfless Service For Children With Disabilities, For Promoting Multi Disciplinary Intervention, And For Advocacy For Rights Of Children With Disabilities.
She has been honored with the prestigious State Commendation Award in 2013, by hands of Hon’ble Governor of Punjab, Shri Shivraj Patil, for commendable contribution in the field of Social Service for children with disabilities.
She has served on the Advisory Panel as Board Member of the TASK Group of National Trust, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment – 2011 for Reviewing Diagnostic and Clinical Approach and Interventional methods used in India for Autism Spectrum Disorders.
She has played an active role in the IAP Chapter of Neuro Developmental Pediatrics. From the year 2010 – 14 she was the Joint Secretary and now since 2015 serving as the National Secretary of the IAP Chapter of Neuro Developmental Pediatrics. She has received Award of Appreciation from the Indian Academy of Pediatrics in 2015, for her services towards IAP Action Plan.
